FASTPITCH SOFTBALL BAT REVIEWS

LENGTHS and DROPS

  • Length (inches) = reach and plate coverage.

  • Drop. (-X) = how heavy the bat is for its length.

  • Examples: 1) 32” -10 weighs 22 oz; 2) 32” -8 weighs 24 oz.

LONGER BATS (32”–34”)

Pros:

  • More plate coverage.

  • Longer barrel = larger SWEET SPOT (usually).

  • Helps taller players reach outside pitches.

Cons:

  • Slower BAT SWING SPEED if hitter’s strength doesn’t scale with length.

  • Harder to control inside pitches.

SHORTER BATS (28”–31”)

Pros:

  • Faster BAT SWING SPEED.

  • Better BAT CONTROL.

  • Easier hit inside pitches.

  • Ideal for developing hitters.

Cons:

  • Less plate coverage.

  • Smaller effective SWEET SPOT.

  • Can limit power for taller/stronger players.

HEAVIER DROPS (-8, -9)

Pros:

  • Higher mass = higher EXIT VELOCITY if BAT SWING SPEED is maintained.

  • Better carry on balls hit with solid contact.

  • Preferred by strong power hitters.

Cons:

  • Slower BAT SWING SPEED for many hitters.

  • Expose flaws in hitter’s swing.

  • Players get tired during ,long games or tournaments.

LIGHTER DROPS (-10, -11, -12)

Pros:

  • Faster BAT SWING SPEED.

  • Easier BAT SWING.Quicker adjustment to pitch speed.

  • Great for contact hitters and younger players.

Cons:

  • Lower power ceiling.

  • MIS-HITS die quicker.

  • Can feel “whippy” for strong hitters.

BOTTOM LINE: The best bat is the heaviest and longest bat a player can swing at full speed — without losing control or timing. If BAT SWING SPEED drops, power drops. PERIOD!!!Most hitters choose bats that are too long or too heavy because “bigge feels better”.It isn’t.

  • If swings are late → bat is too long/heavy.

  • If contact is inconsistent → bat is too heavy.

  • If balls are squared up but don’t carry → bat may be too light for many hitters.

  • Exposes flaws in hitter’s swing.

  • Player fatigue over long games or tournaments.
